Extension of Know-How and Expertise

Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, eager to solidify its role as a major partner for maritime stakeholders (already supporting over 1400 companies in the sector), has chosen, as part of its "Transitions 2024" strategic plan, to structure its organization through the launch of a dedicated sector: the maritime sector. An initiative exemplified, for instance, by the creation of a "Sea" commission by Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne, composed of cooperative directors representing various maritime expertise, illustrating the unique cooperative model of the group.

A Shared Roadmap

Crédit Mutuel Arkéa is already a preferred partner, through its federations Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne and du Sud-Ouest, and several of its businesses and subsidiaries (Arkéa Banque Entreprises et Institutionnels, Arkéa Capital, Arkéa Crédit Bail, Suravenir Assurance...), and has built strong relationships with industry leaders such as Seafoodia, Piriou, Hemarina, Brittany Ferries, and Corsica Ferries. The group has contributed to the financing of port infrastructures in Saint-Malo, Toulon, and Bordeaux, supports over one-fifth of fishermen in Brittany, and is involved with oyster farmers in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Crédit Mutuel Arkéa has thus established a common and shared roadmap to synergize efforts around major challenges, including greening ports, adapting port infrastructure, renewable marine energies, ocean regeneration, and eco-design of fleets.

"This Maritime sector is the natural extension of know-how, expertise, synergies, and the expressed commitment to contribute to the responsible development of territories."

3 questions for Julien Carmona

Can you tell us about the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa's "Transitions 2024" strategic plan?

Through this strategic plan, launched in February 2021, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa positions itself as the agile financial partner of future transitions, serving territories and their stakeholders. The goal is to capitalize on the uniqueness of our model while strengthening our positive impact. Transitions 2024 is based on four major development axes: expanding our range of offerings and services for transitions, supporting the responsible development of territories, personalizing the customer experience, and developing our partnership model. A little over a year after its launch, the initial assessment is very satisfactory, with more than 450 projects identified, of which over 83% are already underway.

What role does the ocean play in this plan?

When you place environmental and societal transitions at the heart of your strategy, tackling maritime challenges becomes self-evident. In France, the maritime sector represents nearly 400,000 jobs, including 75,000 in our historical territories, which account for 34% of France's coastline. We are convinced that the sea is an essential and promising sector for the future, intersecting numerous environmental, economic, technological, and territorial challenges. In this regard, we provide solutions to all stakeholders in the sector in the regions where Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne and du Sud-Ouest are located, as well as to corporate and institutional clients across the entire French maritime coastline. With decision-making centers in regions close to the stakeholders in this sector, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa aims to become the agile and innovative partner of maritime stakeholders.

What short and medium-term goals have you set?

Right now, we need to support stakeholders in their transformations to meet the challenges of decarbonizing fleets, greening and electrifying ports, preserving resources, and renewable marine energies. The common denominator of all these challenges is innovation! Therefore, in the short term, we are enhancing our connections and interactions with maritime ecosystems at the local, regional, and national levels, and will sponsor the Sea Tech Week organized by the World Maritime Campus, which will take place in Brest from September 26 to 30. In the medium term, we will develop our expertise across all entities of the group to strengthen our support solutions for stakeholders in the sector, so that finance can fully play its role as an accelerator of transitions.

The offshore racing, resonating with Arkéa's values

As an active participant in sports sponsorship, particularly in offshore racing, already involved in the Figaro Bénéteau circuit with Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne and soon in the Vendée Globe 2024 with the Imoca Paprec-Arkéa skippered by Yoann Richomme, Arkéa will be the title partner of the next two editions of the Arkéa Ultim Challenge, the first solo round-the-world Ultim race, organized by OC Sport Pen Duick. This highly anticipated round-the-world race on foiling boats will start in December 2023, with Brest as the starting and finishing port.

"This new Ultim class race illustrates our passion for sailing and the sea," says Cédric Malengreau, Director of the General Secretariat and Institutional Communication at Crédit Mutuel Arkéa. Indeed, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa supports sporting events that resonate with its humanistic and cooperative values and its culture of innovation, shared with many SMEs and small businesses in our regions and the Brittany Atlantic Maritime Cluster. This is a priority, as this innovation will tomorrow influence other sectors such as transportation, fishing, or even maritime safety (route optimization, collision prevention, new responsible materials, skipper safety equipment, etc.). Crédit Mutuel Arkéa thus supports both on land and at sea all those who share this same passion for sailing and the sea.
