Paprec Arkéa: a historic second place for a unique model of partnership in the ocean racing sector, reflecting the values of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa
15/01/2025
Brest, January 15, 2025 – After 65 days of an exceptional world tour, Yoann Richomme, skipper of the IMOCA Paprec Arkéa, crossed the finish line of the 2024 Vendée Globe this morning at 7:12 a.m. second place. Beyond the remarkable sporting performance, this result confirms a visionary project carried out by two partners: the Paprec group and Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, co-founders and co-owners of this offshore racing team. This project is both a reflection of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa's anchorage on the Atlantic coast and a concrete illustration of the values of boldness, commitment and openness to which the cooperative banking group is particularly attached.
Historically anchored on the Atlantic arc and resolutely turned towards the ocean, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa has been involved in the ocean racing sector for around twenty years through various commitments: Arkéa Ultim Challenge Brest or even the sector of excellence Brittany-CMB region. In 2021, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa has committed itself, once again to the Paprec group, to carry out an ambitious Vendée Globe project. From the launch of this project, the two partners pushed the limits of simple sponsorship to become co-owners of the offshore racing team Team Spirit Racing and co-owners of the Imoca Paprec Arkéa, a unique initiative in racing. offshore. Together, Crédit Mutuel Arkéa and the Paprec group started from scratch to co-build this entire project in just three years. A project that relies on significant involvement from both companies, sharing not only the majority of costs, but also responsibilities and strategic decisions.
With Crédit Mutuel Arkéa being so involved in the project from the outset, it reflects values that are dear to it: audacity, commitment and openness. Values that the group cultivates on a daily basis to support all of its members and customers in their projects.
Audacity crowned with success
This innovative project is based on daring choices: the first, the choice of the skipper, Yoann Richomme, a talented sailor who has already won many titles on the Figaro and Class40 circuits but is almost a novice in the Imoca class; the second: the design of an innovative Imoca by an architect - Antoine Koch and as part of an alliance with the Finot-Conq firm - who signed his first Imoca there. These daring bets made it possible to transform an ambitious dream into a concrete sporting reality.
A total commitment to shine
This project, carried out vigorously for three years, has experienced the many hazards that mark any prototype sport. These challenges, which Yoann Richomme, Romain Ménard and the entire team around them had to overcome, allowed them to grow, enrich their skills and build a true united and united collective, with the sole objective of making the IMOCA Paprec Arkéa on the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe. The success of this challenge also relies on exemplary cohesion between Paprec Arkéa, the Paprec group and Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, a partnership based on mutual trust and a common vision.
A commitment and perseverance that Yoann Richomme demonstrated throughout the Vendée Globe, managing to return to contact with the lead of the race after bypassing the depression in the Indian Ocean, to maintain constant pressure on the lead of the race. the fleet in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. A commitment and combativeness largely rewarded and savored when he rounded Cape Horn in the lead just before Christmas and, above all, this morning by crossing the finish line of his first solo circumnavigation of the world in 65 days 18 hours 10 minutes and 02 sec, at 10 p.m. 47 min and 13 sec from the leader.
An opening that inspires
Since the start of the project, the choice of an educational and transparent approach around the project has been adopted, giving the opportunity to a large audience to fully immerse themselves in the heart of the Paprec Arkéa offshore racing team.
A transparent approach widely praised by the public throughout the Vendée Globe: Yoann Richomme openly shared his strategic choices, his sail choices, his possible damage, a unique initiative particularly among the top 10 skippers. He also carried out educational work exemplary among schools, organizing in particular through exclusive lives, during the race, followed by up to 3000 students. An action which was a continuation of the educational kit developed in collaboration with the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly, making this adventure widely accessible to young audiences.
Finally, the project carries strong societal and environmental values, a dimension particularly dear to Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, a mission-driven company since 2022. The mutualist group has thus integrated the Habitat & Humanisme association into this project, thus allowing many residents to live the adventure up close. This project also has a major scientific and environmental dimension thanks to beacons from Ifremer and CNES collecting data deployed by Yoann Richomme during the race.
