the birth of the group

The group traces its roots back to the Central Office of Agricultural Mutual Works of Finistère, established in 1911 at the initiative of several landowners. It played a key role in the creation of prominent mutualist groups, including Triskalia, Groupama, and Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne (CMB). Established in 1979, the Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne federation then covered the entire Brittany region. From the 1980s, it expanded its service offerings to meet the evolving needs of its clientele. Under the leadership of Louis Lichou and Yves Le Baquer, several subsidiaries were launched, including Suravenir (life and disability insurance), Suravenir Assurances, and Federal Finance (asset management), to name a few.

The Crédit Mutuel du Sud-Ouest federation, officially constituted in 1975, originated from a banking cooperative created in 1963 by employees of the workshops of the Ruelle foundry in Charente. They came together to save and finance loans at lower costs. The history of Crédit Mutuel du Sud-Ouest intertwined with that of Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne from the 1970s onwards. The merging of the two federations occurred gradually, leading to the CMB-CMSO merger in 1995.
